None of us in the group have been to Port Douglas before but we wanted to do some diving at the reef and perhaps some snorkeling. As we researched tour companies it seemed that we could stay in Cairns (the main city we flew into) but all tours seemed to leave from Port Douglas to get to the Reef. After doing some research it seemed that Port Douglas was the upscale, hidden gem that generally (in season) was outrageously expensive and the ideal place to be. Luckily, we aren't in the middle of high season and that helped us splurge a little for a really great hotel in Port Douglas.
Our hotel website gives this background on Port Douglas:
Situated just a one hour drive north of Cairns along one of Australia’s most scenic coastal roads, the Captain Cook Highway, Port Douglas is a tropical paradise found - and not surprisingly – a popular haven among celebrities, rock stars and politicians seeking anonymity - far and away from the madding crowds and paparazzi.
Port Douglas is a cosmopolitan village by the sea that is surrounded by rainforest with the added beauty of magnificent Four Mile Beach – a playground in itself. Holiday makers love Port Douglas – as much for its front door access to the Great Barrier Reef and World Heritage rainforests – as its heady blend of boutiques, shopping and recreation activities. Golf, day spas and any number of day tours provide ample things to do – or simply sit back, relax and soak up the sun – it’s yours for the taking.
Below is the Google map of Port Douglas and the satellite map. Macrossan is the main street with all the shopping and restaurants.
By early afternoon we had arrived at the Coconut Grove Apartments and eagerly awaited to see what luxurious accommodations we had for the next few days and nights. I have to say it lived up to our expectations and more!
The hotel is really in the middle of it all:
A heavenly retreat awaits at Coconut Grove Apartments Port Douglas - tropical north Queensland’s newest and most impressive interpretation of luxurious Port Douglas accommodation.
Situated in cosmopolitan Macrossan Street, just 140 metres from magnificent Four-Mile Beach, divine views of rainforest mountains and blue seas can be enjoyed in absolute privacy from a choice of 33 glamorous holiday apartments that come complete with their own outdoor entertaining terrace - extending seamlessly from sophisticated living areas - so self-contained, you will never want to leave.
As a holiday destination, Port Douglas is in a class of its own – a paradise found for the most discerning visitor craving relaxation with a certain je ne sais quoi. Chic boutiques, cool eateries, restaurants and internationally-celebrated resorts and golf-courses are the perfect foil to nature’s veritable patchwork of World Heritage listed rainforest, verdant cane fields and Coral Sea.
I have this entire three bedroom condo to myself and I just wish I could move in here. The entire property is amazing and luxurious. I can't describe all the luxury here, so I'll just let all these pictures tell the story for me! Enjoy!
